Shortly placing an order for a C Class estate current facelift model but undecided about which engine, although needs to be a diesel. I particularly love the 3L V6 diesel I have in my current car, so not sure if I would be disappointed in the refinement levels of the 4 cyl engine, although I appreciate it is more economical.

Any thoughts from those with either engine would be much appreciated. I have the facelift C CDi, same twin turbo 4-cyl 2. From the exterior it does sound gruff and a bit rattly on startup, but I'd suggest all 4-cyl diesels do.

Once warmed up it's quiet in car and it's a smooth refined unit, it feels torquey and understressed and I actually think the engine note on hard acceleration is pleasant, though the on-paper figures suggest it's faster than it actually feels. Just sold my C CDI, albeit with the older cc engine, after 6 months as I simply couldn't accept the 4 cylinder engine noise. I know the new cc twin turbo engine is a more modern and smoother engine, but at least fro the outside I still think it sounds rough compared to the silky smooth V6.

My 5 yr old CDi is great but does have some lag and just wondering if this has improved with the current V6? I know it still has just the single turbo, so may still be some lag perhaps? It has plenty of torque and the 7-speed auto is a perfect match. The noise is a bit gruff when cold, but to be fair, the car is well insulated and very refined overall. My commute is an 85 mile each-way motorway schelp, so I am revelling in the economy of the 4-cylinder CDi and am getting high's mpg even on a new engine that is yet to loosen-up. In contrast, my old v6 TDi long-term average was about 26mpg.

No contest! Spoke to the dealer today to confirm the test drives and everything set up for me for Friday, so will give them both a good drive and will report back on the findings. After a mile drive with my CDi today, the 4 cyl has a lot to live up to to match that for refinement and sheer grunt though. If it was turned off and on again, it would be good as new, for another ten minutes! Now theres no power all the time. It wont rev above rpm. I had it plugged into a diagnostic computer and the only fault that wouldnt clear was the "Inlet port shutoff motor " If thats the Pierberg unit just before the inlet manifold, it was all gunged up inside.

I took it out, cleaned it and, using a syringe, checked that it was working properly. The car is just the same as before! Anybody got any ideas???? I made a wee mistake with the error code BlakeyJun 2, The gunge really only starts in the valve where the EGR ties in.

I might just block the EGR and that would rule that out There was a little bit of residue upstream of the EGR valve, but it wasnt enough to worry about. Downstream of the valve into the inlet manifold is black with a tarry residue. It looks like alot of work to get this out and cleaned, but theres no point doing this until i a get the car back to full power and b find out why its there in the first place. The diagnostic doesnt blame the MAF code MAF was present, but i put a new one in last year after a power loss, but it cleared and didnt return.

Dont wanna be throwing money away buying sensors and valves i dont need!!!! Very few diagnostic test show the MAF to be at fault, as Blakey un plug it and try the car, nothing can happen other that to be better. Folks, I disconnected the MAF and its just the same. Does that mean that's definately the problem or is there anything else it can be? There are no sounds out the ordinary and can see the speed is decreasing rather than increasing and then slowly builds back up at a very slow pace but the gears are changing as if you was intending to drive slow and have slow gear change. My car has full service history and i have had it serviced only a week ago on time but problem has not gone away although rare I am concerned it may get worse. I have tried driving in C and S mode but makes no difference.

I thought the idea behind buying a decent car was performance but this does not deliver, my corsa gave more performance than this. It is likely to be the booster pipe which was in my case and loss of power as car system goes into safety mode also known as 'limp mode'.
