Meaning of P engine trouble code is a kind of powertrain trouble code and when the check engine light comes P code on the first you should check is the gas cap. Pull over, retighten it, and take a look at the cap to see if it has any cracks in it. Continue driving and see if the check engine light turns off. All you need to do is take the old one off and screw on the new one.
If you've already made it to the store, you might as well just replace it. While not car-threatening, it's good to take care of this right away to improve gas mileage. Gasoline engines use spark plugs to cause an explosion of fuel within the cylinder. In a properly timed engine, this explosion occurs at the proper moment to send the piston to the bottom of the cylinder and provide power to the drive shaft. If the plug wires are out of sequence, the explosion occurs at the wrong time.
The improper timing of the explosion sometimes pushes the cylinder the wrong direction or interferes with the turning of the crank. As a result, the engine stutters or backfires, if it runs at all. The oxygen 02 sensors on your car measure the oxygen in the exhaust to determine how rich or lean the ratio of fuel and air are in the cylinders. Optimizing this mixture means better fuel economy and fewer exhaust emissions.
P DTC reports a sensor fault, replacement of the sensor is unlikely to resolve the underlying problem. The fault is most likely to be caused by the systems that the sensor is monitoring, but might even be caused by the wiring to the sensor itself.

I know this is an old post, but judging by the views, it has had some interest over the years. I was brought to it by typing in P, because it came up on my Avensis 2.
The car was running perfect and had been for a while. Finding what the code meant posed a snag. There was the answer to the code. First I cleared the code but the lights came back on after 18 miles. A few days later, in Halfords.P2138 And other Electronic Throttle body Codes ( Codes Explained )
I bought it. The lights have never come back on. Its V Power all the time now. I hope this helps someone. You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.

If you've done any type of research before finding this tutorialyou probably already know that:. Now, before I dive right into the tutorial, let me tell you that this tutorial complements several other tutorials which are also found here at easyautodiagnostics.
A generic scan tool is a handy and a must have tool to read diagnostic trouble codes and view some of the Live Data parameters it provides, but it's not gonna' help you to dynamically test APP Sensor 1.
The most important tool that you're gonna' need is a multimeter. Your multimeter can either be a digital multimeter with a bar graph or an analog multimeter. Depending on whether your specific vehicle uses all 3 APP Sensor's or not, the APP Sensor Assembly's electrical connector could have 6 or 9 wires sticking out of it whether the APP Sensor Assembly has 6 or 9 wires sticking out of its connector or not, this tutorial applies to them both.
Below, you're gonna' find a table chart with the job description of each of the wires that stick out of the accelerator pedal's electrical connector. NOTE: There's a good chance that the colors of the wires described below may not match what's on your specific vehicle AND this is no cause for concern since the circuits are the same regardless of the color of the wire. If you've done any type of research before finding this tutorialyou probably already know that: The Accelerator Pedal Position sensor is inside the Accelerator Pedal Assembly.
The Accelerator Pedal Assembly is not connected to the throttle plate via a cable like in the good ole' days. Each one has separate signal, Ground, and 5. That APP Sensor 1's signal increases as the accelerator pedal is depressed, from below 1. That APP Sensor 2's signal decreases from above 3.
That APP Sensor's 3 signal decreases from above 3. Lack of power when accelerating the engine. Applies To:. Cadillac Vehicles:. Chevrolet Vehicles:.
GMC Vehicles:.This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation. Our certified mobile mechanics can come to your home or office to perform the Check Engine Light diagnostic. P is a generic OBD-II code that is triggered when the engine control module ECM detects that the secondary circuit to the fuel pump has a high voltage when the fuel pump relay is turned off.
The engine control module ECM monitored the secondary fuel pump circuit voltage from the fuel pump relay when the relay is turned off and there was voltage getting to the fuel pump to keep running the pump even after the key is turned off.
The fuel pump relay is stuck on, keeping power supplied to the fuel pump even after the ignition has been turned off. Tests to see if voltage is getting to the fuel pump secondary circuit through the IFS and relay after the engine has been turned off. Lightly taps the relay, if power is still being supplied through the relay, to see if power turns off, which would indicate that the relay is sticking and needs replaced.
Check for an internal short in the ECM if it continues to supply power to the relay after the ignition has been turned off. Look for a stuck fuel pump relay by lightly tapping it to see if it is sticking, while monitoring to see if the voltage turns off to the secondary circuit.
If the relay is stuck in the On position, the fuel pump secondary circuit can continue to run the fuel pump until the battery dies. The continued short will not only kill the battery, but will put excessive strain on the fuel pump and wiring to the pump, causing additional failures of components.
Replacing the fuel pump relay if it is making a connection on the secondary side of the relay after the ignition is turned off. Replacing the battery after the relay is replaced, if it will not recharge. Code P is triggered when voltage in the fuel pump secondary circuit is shorted to vehicle power through the relay. The ECM monitors this voltage to see if it stays on after the key is turned off.
The most common failure is a relay stuck to the On position internally. YourMechanic offers certified mobile mechanics who will come to your home or office to diagnose and repair your vehicle. I thought that this was just due to the colder winter conditions and the car getting a bit older 56,miles - plus the fact that I've never properly serviced the car since 30kmiles. I've also noticed that the car most noticeably upon starting but also during general driving is emitting blackish smoke rather than the normal exhaust fumes.
Additionally, the car was struggling to start more than usual. Otherwise, there's no noticeable difference in driving - perhaps a slight difference in the idling it sits happily at rpm but not quite as 'steady' as usual. Changed engine Oilfilter, air filter, fuel filter - symptoms persist. Replaced Batteryspark plugs - symptoms persist though starting improved but not perfect. RAC guy also thought that the tapping on idle and revving was excessively loud and he suggested that the 2nd injector was blocked or not spraying properly.
P1238 - Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit Fault
He recommended googling further and perhaps trying Forte Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment as a last shot before t aking to dealer or diesel specialist. Is there anything else worth trying before taking to garage? Is it possible to 'clean' or 'unblock' an injector? It can be a diy job, but iirc when you install a new injector you have to tell the edu a new one is installed.
When you receive a new one the flow rate is printed on the side and you must tell the edu what it is so it can learn how to use it. As for actually changing it yourself. Its possible but just make sure you haven't driven the car in a while. The fuel rail in a diesel is under a tremendous amount of pressure. If you don't leave it to de-pressurise your going to end up with fuel everywhere.
Not sure if I have helped or not, but yeah you can do it yourself then take it to get programmed. Might be cheaper. If anyone knows anything more about the programming side of things please elaborate, last time I looked all this up was for my old car, things might have changed since.
Replaced battery, spark plugs - symptoms persist though starting improved but not perfect. Can I just clarify, when you said you replaced the spark plugs did you mean the heater plugs? However, it hasn't resolved the noise tapping engine noise which continues to concern me.
To clarify, the noise is most noticeable when idle at revs but also noticeable during general driving, moreso at lower speeds. Difficult to speculate, I know, but anyone any ideas?

I have dealt with a stored code P on many occasions and I have found that it means the powertrain control module PCM has detected a discrepancy in the voltage signal between a particular throttle position sensor TPS and a particular pedal position sensor PPS.
Consult a reputable vehicle information source such as All Data DIY for specifics pertaining to your vehicle. This code is used exclusively in drive by wire DBW equipped vehicles. OBD-II vehicles use the DBW system in lieu of a cable operated throttle to help decrease exhaust emissions, increase fuel efficiency, interact more efficiently with stability and traction control systems, and optimize the accuracy of cruise control systems.
The DBW system is controlled by the PCM using a throttle actuator motor, one or more pedal position sensors sometimes referred to as accelerator position sensorsand multiple throttle position sensors. These sensors are supplied with a reference voltage typically 5-volts and a ground signal. The contacts of the sensor are actuated by a pivoting fulcrum extension on the accelerator pedal or the throttle plate shaft. As the contacts are moved across a circuit board, sensor resistance changes; causing variations in circuit resistance and therefore the signal input voltage to the PCM.
The PPS sensors are mounted on the accelerator pedal bracket, inside the vehicle. When the pedal is depressed, the PCM receives an input signal to open the throttle plate, as well as a signal letting it know to what degree the throttle plate should be opened. If the two signal inputs vary by more than the acceptable programmed limit, for more than a certain period of time, a code P will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp MIL should be illuminated.
In most cases, the PCM will also enter limp in mode. In this mode, engine acceleration will be severely limited if not disabled. The first step of most successful diagnosis is a visual inspection of all system related wiring and connectors. I would also check the throttle plate for signs of carbon buildup or damage. Repair or replace defective wiring or components as required and retest the DBW system.
Use the scanner to retrieve all stored trouble codes and write them down for future reference. You may also want to keep any related freeze frame data. Your notes may prove helpful if the P is intermittent. Clear the codes and test drive the vehicle. If the code is reset, continue with the diagnosis.P Toyota the main thing to check is to verify the operation of the VCT solenoid.
You're looking for a sticking or stuck VCt solenoid valve caused by contamination. Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit. Remove the air filter box assembly so you can access the transmission range switch. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the vehicle. Move the shifter to the neutral position. Align the alignment holes between the switch and the shift lever. Insert a 5mm drill bit into the adjustment hole to verify the proper alignment for the neutral position.
Indicator and headlight bulbs need regular maintenance for them to keep functioning properly. Also the car paint ought to be in good condition because that reduces the chances of rust taking over the body of your car.
This is one of those car maintenance problems, which are easy to handle, given the variety and quality of products available in the market today.
